Conference
The Sabar Rek ATLANTA Conference & Cultural Event encapsules the spirit and cultural
heritage of Senegal / the Senegambia region. Traditions are not just art forms, but
also serve as vital components of social, ceremonial, and spiritual life within its West African communities.
Every Year. Every Fall. Every October. The weekend prior to Indigenous People's Day, we
gather to foster a heightened sense of community and fellowship—using traditional arts and culture
to empower individuals to become active participants in shaping a more inclusive future.
With early beginnings in 2013 as small dance intenives, and under the stewardship of culture bearer, djéli, and artist, Assane Kouyaté, it has transformed into a 3-day educational, cultural, and immersive arts experience that preserves indigenous traditions, brings diverse communities together, and celebrates Atlanta's large West African immigrant communities and culture.
Exuberant Dance Labs guided by masterful indigenous artists, that blend rigorous physical practice with historical exploration and verbal chants. Dance centers around SABAR art forms—almost aerodynamic in nature— of Wolof, Serer, and diverse ethnic groups, with hints of Serer, Koutiro, Serouba, & Wango.
Set aside the djembes. Learn traditional rhythmic baks and complex phrases from the SABAR drum family, played with hand and stick. Drum Labs evoke vibrant responses that are both audible and physical, reinforcing social bonds and cultural identity.
Discover BASKETS & BREWS, our pop-up artisanal mini-market. Handcrafted items, natural teas and beverages, adornment, clothing and food for purchase. Supporting local and global economic development.
An intimate late-night community gathering and social justice initiative. A TANEBEER of taste/cuisine, fashion (a mini La Nuit du Bazin showcase), music, dance, performance, dialogue and more. Individuals gather to bask in the richness of tradition and social justice. African elegant or formal wear required at this cultural extravaganza.
